Professor E.E. Griffith began teaching English at the Colleges in 1946 and soon took over as faculty director of the Little Theater. Professor Griffith was well respected and celebrated for the enthusiasm and energy that he brought to every show that he worked on. He also began a Summer Theater that brought local Genevians, HWS students and out-of-town performers together to work on many shows.

English Honors 200

As Hobart and William Smith did not have a Theater department until 2014, students interested in studying theater from a literary or practical standpoint did so under the English department. Advanced students completed an honors project in English Honors 200. Many wrote and directed plays as part of Honors. In 1953, Paul Berkowsky completed his honors project on children’s theater and directed the play Rumpelstiltskin by Charlotte Chorpenning. This was the beginning of The Children’s Theater at HWS.
